About

Brian Hunter is a Red River Métis artist based in Winnipeg, working in painting and video. His recent oil paintings on wood respond to a shifting and uncertain world. They are dark yet vibrant, immediate and intuitive: figures emerge and dissolve through layers of colour, offering glimpses of form within abstraction.
Hunter received a BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montreal in 2007. From 2012 to 2013 he spent a year in residence at the Gwangju Museum of Art in South Korea. His work has been shown at Kunsthalle Gwangju, the Ourense International Film Festival in Spain and The Power Plant in Toronto. In 2016 he won the 18th RBC Canadian Painting Competition.
In 2025 he presented On Shaky Ground, 22 new oil paintings, at 226 Main Gallery in Winnipeg.
He is represented by Lucent Gallery + Design Studio, 102-52 Albert Street, Winnipeg.
